Service and Conflict in Sri Lanka

April 16, 2009

Thunk! I smile as my head almost hits the window and I fumble with the video camera. The heavy, sudden rains that appear most evenings quickly fill up buffalo-sized pocks in the dirt road to the Islander Center. I had picked up some good duty free gin, and we miraculously find a single bottle of cold tonic water and some limes in a village outside Colombo. The good fortune and our anticipation of a cold G & T in the heavy, damp heat of the Sri Lankan afternoons put us in a jovial mood.

Master Blaster Rickshaw Driver

April 3, 2009

Made a video ad for our favorite Rickshaw Driver/Guide in the world, Master Blaster Rickshaw Driver, Tousief, as he shows us beadie rolling factories, a 100+ year old oil and fragrance distributor, and an amazing night of glory in Mysore.

Oh, the Glory!

March 20, 2009

My buddy Chris Michael (and his old Enfield, Mingus) and I (on the mighty Colonel) are riding hard, up through amazing tea estates, canoeing through Kerala backwaters, stopping by Amma the Hugging Baba for a quickie, riding through beaches and forests and mountains and thunderstorms and packs of waving smiling schoolkids, getting chased by elephants (apparently very dangerous creatures), and generally passing our time on this earth well. Exhausted by the end of each day, and with spotty internet, I have deprived you of photos and, especially, the last 2 months of video. Stay tuned, I begin editing after I drop Chris at the airport (tomorrow - sob!).

Wondering if I should do a weekly video update? If anyone cares, I will. Let me know.

A Brahman Vacation

February 25, 2009

A five hour drive from Mumbai in Sudhir Karnik's 4WD Gypsy takes us to a simple stone structure that serves as Jimmy and Anne's getaway cabin. The view is lake Mulshi, and we are surrounded by wildlife and peace, very different from life in Mumbai.

Rishikesh, land of the Yogis

February 5, 2009

Unanimous votes lead me to Rishikesh, low into the mountains, a hub for aspiring yogis and chilled out housewives, trekkers and rafters and Indians on vacay. I have hired a music teacher, room and board for about $15 a day.

Maiden Voyage and Sloppy Seconds

January 29, 2009

Tales of dis(re)pair... The Maiden Voyage: 30km around Delhi and 3 breakdowns. Sloppy Seconds: 1200km to Dharamsala and 2 breakdowns, 6 broken parts. Glorious!

Chill(um) in Mumbai

January 13-17, 2009

Tales of the live music scene, 1984-like public awareness programs, and what it's like to be 20 in Mumbai.

G-G-G-Gandhi

December 29 through January 13, 2009

1. I am a big fan of Gandhi.
2. The impetus for this motorcycle trip starting in India was this:

I am co-leading a reality tour with Global Exchange called the Gandhian Legacy Tour. Gandhi's grandson Arun and great-grandson Tushar take 26 of us through India, meeting with people who are carrying on his legacy of non-violent resistance and empowerment of the lower classes, among other brilliant ideas.

I blogged it here.

A Where's Bergen Holiday Special Video

Made a video for you all for the Holidays. Merry Christmas, etc...!

Royal (Berg)Enfield

December 20, 2008

I now have my very own Royal Enfield®!

After testing my spice levels last night (A+, thank you Hot Wing crew) at a North Indian dive, Chanderjeet picked me up on his Enfield this morning, bright and early, took me back to his family's house in Ashok Vihar. There, in the driveway stood a dusty old beater with 6 coats of paint... my baby!

While there, his wife was kind enough to teach me how to make a proper Indian breakfast, and I spent the morning chatting with her while kneading little yummy potato pancakes (or "Aloo Paratha" as they say in "Hindi") seasoned with garam masala, red chilis, fennel, dried pomegranate (tangy!), coriander, salt. Dip it in a little curd... nibble on a little pickled mango...

Mmmmmm....

OK, back to my bike. It looks like a total beater, but everybody who works on it wants to buy it, so that's good.

Twa! MacGyver! That's your new name! I need your help! Actually, I need everybody's help, time for...

¡¡¡ WB Contest #1 !!!

First Impressions

Paharganj, New Delhi, India
December 17, 2008:

The sun has set on the first day of my voyage, and I feel strangely at home. The chaotic sounds and smells of India fill me with a sense of freedom and adventure. Arriving by plane early this morning, today I wandered Delhi on foot, moto-rickshaw, bus, metro, bicycle rickshaw, hired car and taxi with my loving hosts Jessie and Tashi.

The Gerbil Has Landed

Paharganj, New Delhi, India
December 17, 2008:

2:53 AM - Walking out to the strangely cool mists and pollution of Delhi was surreal. Jessie Litven and her bf Tashi wake up the cabbie and we drive back to sleep 3 to a bed, stepping over sleeping bodies in the lobby of the Mother Palace. Hear that, mom? For you.

Asleep by 5am, up by 9am, and I'm feeling great. The smells as I stepped out onto our porch are so... so... rich. Curries and bodies and everything. Omelettes and milk-tea on the street, and I'm ready for day 1.

And... the adventure begins

San Francisco, California, October 9

Just got my ticket on British Airways to Delhi on December 15. I'll be leading a delegation with Arun Gandhi (The Mahatma's Grandson) on his final Gandhian Legacy tour, as trip co-lead and liason to the Canadian group that will be filming a documentary of the tour. Finally! I'm on my way...

Return date: Unknown.

Most Recent Sighting: San Francisco, CA

Goal

Creatively document a worldwide motorcycle adventure, in each community exploring innovative cultural traditions, musical and culinary techniques, and creative solutions to life's challenges.

In effect, I'm riding around, making little tiny baby documentaries (s.a. "How to Cook a Pupusa, with Maria Sanchez", "A Night with the Ahmedabad Rockers", and "Fair Trade Coffee - What's the Difference?")

Description of the Journey

This year, I'm going to be traveling the world on my motorcycle, and I'm bringing everyone I know with me.

I have a two-wheeled mobile headquarters tricked out with the latest in documentary A/V equipment, live Satellite GPS tracking on a Google Maps mashup, and a kinetic and solar powered workstation - completely self-contained. I have an address book full of some of the most interesting social and environmental problem-solvers all over the globe...

¿Who's Bergen?

Bergen was born in the deep woods of Napa Valley, California to a Norwegian chef and an entrepreneurial pilot. Their creative parenting style shaped his particular sense of humor - the large local high school would later vote him class president, class clown, and the luckiest guy in school.
